Last week, a group of Accruent employees including myself attended the 52nd ASHE Annual Conference and Technical Exhibition in Boston, MA. We joined more than 3,000 healthcare facility management and engineering professionals to network, attend education sessions and get face-to-face interaction with accreditation organization representatives and industry experts.
I have been attending the annual conference hosted by the American Society for Healthcare Engineering for the past 10 years. The organization is “dedicated to optimizing the healthcare physical environment,” and as part of a team that provides solutions to hospitals and healthcare systems, these conferences provide a great opportunity to understand our clients’ needs. I always come back full of ideas on how our products can be enhanced to provide our clients with the tools they need to comply with strict regulations.
The conference was a mix of social activities, including a night at Fenway Park, informational classes and time to walk the tradeshow floor. I was delighted to see that ASHE and The Joint Commissions are working together and have created a portal called The Physical Environment. The portal will serve to provide guidance and education on frequently cited compliance issues. It addresses eight identified Standards and provides examples of successful compliance from high reliability organizations. It will also include best practice information in the patient care environment.
Besides getting updated and having one-on-one conversations with reps from The Joint Commission, it was really great to also see our customers in person. Since we provide a lot of our services remotely, we relish the chances where we can grab coffee with people we regularly communicate with over email and phone.
I also enjoyed our client’s presentation; Oregon Health & Science University gave a one-hour presentation, “Delight Your CFO: Using Facilities Capital Planning to Optimize Scarce Capital and Reduce Operating Expenses.” The session focused on the importance of having a strong capital plan, as well as how to keep a conversation going with top executives and stakeholders about deferred maintenance.
The ASHE conference is one of many healthcare shows we attend to stay updated on industry trends, news and issues. This year’s event proved to be worthwhile and we look forward to attending next summer’s conference in Denver, CO. We’re also excited to play host at our upcoming customer conference, User Forum, in Victoria, BC!
