Last week, a group of six colleagues and I attended the ICSC (International Council of Shopping Centers) RECON retail conference at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. It was the first time to attend for most of us, and we all quickly learned that this was the place to promote your product, strengthen existing relationships and forge new ones through deals made right there on the showroom floor.

The event was buzzing with energy – everybody had something to share, from news tidbits to ideas on the future of retail to food samples. Everyone tried to warn me how vast the conference is. It’s hard to understand until you’re in the sea of blue and black suits and amidst the bustle akin to a Manhattan sidewalk.

If you do a search, you might see that a trending topic was Peyton Manning, quarterback for the Denver Broncos, and his keynote speech. Manning, the only NFL player to earn five-time Most Valuable Player and 14-time Pro Bowl selection, did an amazing job of talking about transferable skills from the football fields to leading practices for retail leaders. He was dynamic, funny and had the perfect message to kick off the massive event.

We were just a few among 35,000 attendees, including brokers, mall developers, retailers, vendors and city representatives. Some booths were large enough to include enclosed offices and meeting spaces! We asked one of our attending customers how they felt about the show, and their response was that it was one of the best places to establish and focus on the relationships with other brokers, retailers and vendors.

About 75 percent of our retailer customers were in attendance. A highlight for me was the opportunity to introduce them to Bill Glass, our new regional vice president of retail, who has a great understanding of Accruent solutions and retail experience. He brings a deep knowledge base and forward-thinking energy to our team.

We had a great time not only catching up with our customers, but also attending the educational sessions to hear more about the current state of retail and the direction it’s headed. Stay tuned for future blog posts about what we learned!
