IT Team refurbishes laptops for distance learning and HR Team assists with resume reviews

Austin, TX, May 19, 2020 – The spring of 2020 progressed as normal through the beginning of spring break season but changed seemingly overnight as the COVID-19 outbreak began impacting population centers and spreading rapidly. Stores closed, millions of people were laid off or furloughed, most other employees were asked to work from home, and schools across the country were cleared of people and property within days and educators were forced to shift from traditional classroom instruction and homework to distance learning using recorded lectures, online meeting technology, and coursework being submitted via the internet.

The immediate changes brought on by COVID-19 shocked many households. Individuals that lost jobs suddenly needed to prepare themselves to seek new employment, a task for which they were unprepared. Also, while many households had access to technology that is well-suited for distance learning, others could not afford up-to-date technology or had more students than computers in their homes. Unemployment and distance learning were both capable of creating burdens on many families that could impact their ability to make ends meet and the students’ long-term academic success.

As the COVID-19 impact hit local families and schools, members of the Accruent IT and Human Resources teams recognized opportunities to partner with the company to give back to the community during trying times. Accruent IT staffers noticed that the company had a number of laptop computers that were likely to be recycled or otherwise discarded. Led by IT Team Lead Kyle Thomas, team members identified computers that could be repurposed for educational use, tested them, wiped off existing data and reinstalled software on them to facilitate distance learning. In total, Accruent and its employees were able to donate 38 laptop computers directly to families or to the Austin Independent School District for distribution to families in need of computers for distance learning.

In addition, as COVID-19 reduced recruiting and new hires HR team members knew that their skills and experience in the hiring and interviewing process could greatly assist those with a sudden need of modern job search skills. With the support of Accruent, members of its HR team offered assistance to jobseekers in the Austin area and internationally.

As part of this effort, Accruent HR professionals have provided both tactical advice and resume writing assistance to jobseekers. The international team’s “Career Advice Wednesdays” was so well received that it will continue to provide assistance to jobseekers post COVID-19. Thus far, Accruent HR team members have assisted jobseekers in the United States, United Kingdom, India, US, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands and Spain.
